Obverse description The gold-plated central field depicts the Quadriga of the Brandenburg Gate, showing a winged charioteer driving a four-horse chariot in relief. The central device is surrounded by a ring of twelve stars, with the legends DEUTSCHLAND and EINIGKEIT · RECHT · FREIHEIT arranged around the inner border. The outer silver-toned rim bears the legend 10 JAHRE ABSCHIED VON DER DEUTSCHEN MARK, and at the bottom a color-enameled depiction of three German national flags.

Reverse description The silver-toned reverse features a stylized German eagle in the field, overlaid with gold-plated relief depictions of nine Deutsche Mark circulation coins arranged in a fan pattern, including the 1, 2, 5, 10, and 50 Pfennig and the 1 and 5 Deutsche Mark coins, as well as three portrait coins of successive Federal Presidents. The legend KURSMÜNZENSATZ 2001 arcs across the top of the field.
