Obverse description Left-facing bust of Marianne, the allegorical figure of the French Republic, wearing a laurel and floral wreath in her hair. The engraver's name BARRE appears in the exergue below the effigy. The suspension consists of an oak wreath loop above the medal.

Reverse description Two standing allegorical figures flank a central oval cartouche: on the left, a male figure representing Courage accompanied by a lion at his feet, and on the right, a draped female figure representing Humanity holding a young child. The cartouche bears the recipient's name and award date in relief. Labels at the base of each figure identify the allegories. The suspension loop with oak wreath surmounts the whole composition.
