Reverse description Central field features a stylized castle or tower motif rendered in a highly schematic, angular fashion, enclosed within a plain inner circle. The architectural device, a hallmark of early Portuguese royal imagery, is depicted frontally with a broad base and a single central tower element, characteristic of the primitive die-cutting technique of the period. The surrounding peripheral legend in crude Romanesque capitals reads PORTVGAL (with documented die variations PORTVGALI and PORTVGALENS), distributed around the flan between the inner circle and the irregular hammered edge. The overall design exhibits the bold, somewhat barbarous style typical of billon mealhas struck during the reign of Sancho I.
