| Obverse description | Crowned royal effigy facing left in profile, rendered in crude medieval style typical of late 14th- to early 15th-century Castilian billon coinage. The bust is enclosed within a beaded or rope inner circle. The surrounding peripheral legend reads ENRICVS REX, identifying the monarch as Enrique III of Castile. The strike is irregular and flat in areas, consistent with hammered production of the period. |

Enrique III ruled Castile in poor health throughout his reign — contemporaries called him "el Doliente," the Sufferer — yet his administration pursued aggressive monetary reform aimed at curbing the debased billon coinage that had proliferated under his father Juan I. The meaja, worth half a blanca, sat at the absolute bottom of the Castilian denominations, and Burgos as a royal mint held particular prestige in authorizing these fractional issues.
AB#611 specimens are frequently found with weak or off-center strikes, a consequence of the small flan size relative to die diameter — a known production characteristic of this type, not individual wear.
