Obverse description Crowned equestrian figure of King Alfonso VIII advancing to the right, depicted in a schematic Romanesque style characteristic of Castilian medieval coinage. The king is shown mounted on horseback, holding an olive branch in his right hand, with the horse rendered in profile. The inscription TOLE, an abbreviation for Toledo, appears in the lower field beneath the horse, identifying the issuing city. The flan is irregular and slightly ragged at the edges, consistent with hammered billon coinage of this period.
