The Hōei Mitsuhō Mameitagin was an emergency recoinage issued in 1710–1711 to address the monetary chaos triggered by Arai Hakuseki's reforms under the fifth shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi's successor, Ienobu. The standard Mameitagin were irregular hand-struck silver lumps used in western Japan's mercantile economy, and the Mitsuhō type was produced at the Kinza and Ginza mints in Edo, Kyoto, and Nagasaki. The character 寳 stamped on these pieces was a deliberate quality marker distinguishing them from earlier debased issues.
