Reverse description The emperor Valentinian II stands facing right in a commanding military pose, holding a Chi-Rho labarum standard in his right hand and a globe surmounted by a Victory in his left. His right foot rests upon a seated or prostrate captive barbarian, symbolising Roman military dominance. The composition is executed in the characteristic late Roman flat relief style. The reverse legend VIRTVS EXERCITI, meaning 'Bravery of the Army', encircles the type, with the mint mark appearing in the exergue.
