Obverse description Diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Theodosius I facing right, wearing a beaded diadem and imperial paludamentum fastened at the right shoulder. The emperor's features are rendered in the characteristic late antique stylized manner, with a strong profile and prominent jaw. The encircling legend reads DN THEODOSIVS PF AVG, abbreviated for Dominus Noster Theodosius Pius Felix Augustus, positioned around the perimeter of the flan.

Reverse description Standing frontal figure of the emperor in full military dress, helmeted and holding a labarum (chi-rho standard) in his right hand and a Victory on a globe in his left hand, symbolizing Roman imperial dominion and Christian triumph. The emperor's feet rest upon a captive or prone barbarian figure, alluding to Roman military supremacy over foreign enemies. The legend GLORIA ROMANORVM encircles the design, and the mintmark SMHA appears in the exergue, identifying the Heraclea mint, first officina.
