Additional information

Mahaut of Artois inherited the county in 1302 following a succession dispute with her nephew Robert III, a conflict that consumed much of her reign and eventually reached the court of Philip IV. Her coinage was struck during this legally contested period, which makes the attribution of specific issues to precise dates within the range genuinely difficult — minting authority itself was part of what was being fought over.

Mahaut was twice accused of poisoning French kings, Louis X in 1316 and Philip V in 1322, though neither charge was ever proven.
