Obverse description Central field depicts a stylized facing figure, likely a bust or heraldic emblem, rendered in crude relief characteristic of early medieval Flemish hammered coinage. Two large letter-like forms flank the central device, appearing as a broad 'N' to the left and a 'O' or circular element to the upper right, composing part of the mint name AALOST. The design is confined within a roughly circular flan with an uneven, irregular edge typical of hand-struck small silver coinage of the thirteenth century. The overall style is archaic and schematic, reflecting the anonymous municipal coinage tradition of the County of Flanders.
