Obverse description Left-facing helmeted and cuirassed bust of Marianne, the allegorical figure of the French Republic, in high relief. The helmet is elaborately decorated with a visor and plume. The engraver's signature O.Roty appears in the field to the left of the bust, with the circular legend RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE along the rim.

Reverse description A centrally placed naval anchor entwined with intertwined oak and laurel branches, with a furled flag draped around the anchor's shaft and a bugle in the foreground. The legend MADAGASCAR curves along the upper rim, with HONNEUR ET PATRIE inscribed across the flag in the field, and the date 1895 in the lower exergue.
