Obverse description Lion's head facing right, depicted in high relief with finely rendered mane rendered in incised lines radiating from the face. The powerful feline effigy is rendered in the Achaemenid-influenced artistic tradition common to Samarian coinage of the Persian period. The field is plain and unadorned, with no legend or inscription present. The flan is characteristically irregular, as expected of a hammered obol of this period and denomination.
