| Obverse description | Crowned royal initial 'F' for Philippus (Felipe I) set within a beaded inner circle, flanked on either side by a trifoil ornament. The crowned letter is rendered in the gothic style typical of Iberian hammered coinage of the period. A Latin legend encircling the central device reads the king's titulature, with the denomination 'LXXX' (80 Réis) also incorporated into the legend. The overall design is characteristic of Portuguese hammered silver coinage of the Philippian period. |
