Obverse description Central field depicts a rampant lion of Flanders facing left, crowned, set upon a ground line beneath which the mint name appears in Gothic lettering. The lion is rendered in the vigorous late medieval style characteristic of Flemish coinage, with detailed mane and extended claws. An inner beaded circle frames the central device, while the surrounding legend in uncial Latin characters reads the abbreviated titulature of Philip the Handsome as Duke of Burgundy and Count of Flanders. A cross pattee serves as the legend's initial mark at the top of the coin.
