Summerside's trade dollar program was administered by the Greater Summerside Chamber of Commerce as a local merchant incentive scheme — businesses accepted the tokens at face value, encouraging dollars to circulate within the local economy rather than leave it. The Lighthouse Dollar series tied each annual issue to a specific PEI landmark, making the 2003 piece one of a themed run rather than a standalone curiosity.
Prince Edward Island has an unusually dense concentration of historic lighthouses relative to its coastline length, a direct consequence of the notoriously shallow and shifting sandbars of the Northumberland Strait.
