Obverse description Central field features a large crowned monogram composed of the interlaced letters A and I (for Antonius and Ioana), surmounted by a fleur-de-lis crown. The monogram is rendered in bold relief against a flat, unadorned field. A beaded inner circle separates the central device from the surrounding circular legend. The circumferential legend in Latin reads: + ANT. ET. IOA. DEI G RR. NA. D. D.B., identifying Anthony of Bourbon and Joan of Albret as king and queen of Navarre and lords of Béarn. The coin is struck on an irregular flan typical of mid-sixteenth-century hammered billon coinage.
