Obverse lettering + L. P. DOMBAR. D. MONTISP. C
(Translation: Louis, prince of Dombes, duke of Montpensier.)
Reverse description Central field features a floriated cross with four arms terminating in fleurs-de-lis, a classic heraldic device associated with the French royal and princely tradition. The cross is boldly struck in relief and occupies the majority of the reverse field. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, incorporating the date and a devotional inscription. The lettering is rendered in a Gothic-influenced Roman script characteristic of French feudal billon issues of the period. The irregular, clipped flan and uneven strike are consistent with hammered manufacture.
