Reverse description A plain cross pattee divides the reverse into four quarters, with the first and fourth quarters charged with a fleur-de-lis, the royal emblem of France, and the second and third quarters bearing a crowned ermine spot, the heraldic symbol of Brittany. This quartered arrangement reflects Charles VIII's dynastic union of France and Brittany following his marriage to Anne de Bretagne in 1491. The design is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding circular legend in Gothic script reads: SIT NOMEN DNI BENEDICTV[M] N, invoking the blessing of the Lord's name.
