Obverse description Narrow draped bust of Charles I of Gonzaga, Duke of Nevers and Rethel, facing right, with long curling hair and lace collar, set within a beaded border. The legend CAR·GONZ·D·NIV·ET·RETH· runs around the periphery, identifying the ruler as Charles of Gonzaga, Duke of Nevers and Rethel. The date appears in the lower field beneath the bust, divided by a horizontal line. The portrait is rendered in a relatively crude hammered style characteristic of provincial French feudal coinage of the early seventeenth century.
