Additional information

Mustafa II came to the throne in 1695 determined to personally lead Ottoman armies against the Holy League — an ambition that ended catastrophically at the Battle of Zenta in 1697, where Eugene of Savoy destroyed an Ottoman force mid-river crossing and captured the imperial treasury wagons. The kurus itself was a relatively new denomination at this point, introduced in the late 17th century as the Ottoman monetary system attempted to anchor large-denomination silver coinage against chronic debasement pressure. Billon at .425 fineness reflects how far that project had already slipped.
