Additional information

Bern's late cantonal coinage exists in a narrow window — after 1798, the Helvetic Republic's centralization swept away the monetary prerogatives of the individual Swiss cantons entirely. This piece was struck just six years before that rupture, making it among the final expressions of Bern's independent minting authority, which the city-state had exercised continuously since the medieval period.
