Obverse description Central device depicts a mounted horseman, representing the Tsar, on a galloping horse facing right, bearing a raised spear — the traditional image of St. George and the sovereign combined in Russian wire money iconography. The figure is rendered in the archaic, schematic style characteristic of hammered kopecks of the period. Cyrillic letters appearing beneath the horse's hooves serve as a date or mintmark abbreviation. The design occupies an irregularly shaped flan typical of wire-cut silver coinage.
