During the joint reign of Ivan V and Peter I — imposed by the Miloslavsky faction following the Streltsy revolt of 1682 — coinage protocol became a political instrument. Wire money of this period was struck with both tsars' names in rotation, and pieces naming Peter specifically date to the co-regency years before Ivan's death in 1696 effectively ended the arrangement. The regent Sophia, who held real power throughout, left no mark on the coinage itself.
