Obverse description Obverse of this wire kopeck (cheshuyка) depicts a horseman in profile to the right, rendered in the traditional Muscovite manner characteristic of Russian scale money. The mounted figure, representing the Tsar as a lance-bearing rider (копейщик), is shown atop a prancing horse with the lance directed downward, a motif directly inherited from late medieval Russian coinage. Due to the inherent limitations of the hammered wire technique, the design is partially struck and appears compressed within the irregular oval flan. The relief is shallow and the flan surface displays the characteristic uneven texture of drawn silver wire coinage.
