| Obverse description | Obverse of this wire money (cheshуika) depicts a stylized equestrian figure of the Tsar in profile to the right, shown as a mounted warrior bearing a lance or spear, rendered in the highly schematic, deeply-struck manner characteristic of Russian hammered wire coinage of the early eighteenth century. The planchet is of irregular, roughly oval form, the result of the wire-cutting and hand-hammering production technique. The design is set within an unbordered field, and the flat relief of the strike causes portions of the design to fall off the irregular flan edge. The overall style is consistent with the traditional Moscow mint horseman type employed throughout the reigns of the later Tsars. |
