Obverse description A mounted horseman, representing the Tsar, depicted in profile galloping to the right and brandishing a spear — the traditional St. George-type lance motif inherited from earlier Muscovite coinage. The figure is rendered in the bold, schematic style characteristic of wire money (chekha) production. Cyrillic letters denoting the regnal date in Church Slavonic numerical notation appear beneath the horse's hooves. The flan is irregular in outline, consistent with the hand-cut wire-money production technique of the period.
