| Obverse description | Equestrian effigy of the Tsar depicted in right profile, showing an armored rider on horseback brandishing a lance or spear directed downward toward a fallen figure or serpent beneath the horse's hooves, rendered in the bold, stylized manner characteristic of Russian wire money of the sixteenth century. The design occupies the entire irregular flan, with the figure executed in high relief against an unadorned field. The mint mark К-ВА (indicating the Velikiy Novgorod mint) appears in the field, divided by the rider's lance. The composition is typical of the 'kopeck' type introduced under Ivan IV, derived from the earlier 'horseman' (vsadnik) motif. |
