| Obverse description | A mounted warrior depicted in profile galloping to the right, brandishing a spear or lance — the characteristic design that gave these coins the name 'kopeck' (from 'kopyo', spear). The horse is shown in full stride. Beneath the hooves of the horse appear the mint initials АЛ, identifying the Novgorod mint emission and the mintmaster responsible. The design is rendered in the bold, summary style typical of Russian wire money of the sixteenth century. |

| Reverse description | The reverse carries a multi-line Cyrillic inscription arranged in horizontal registers across the entire flan, reading 'Tsar and Grand Prince Ivan of all Rus.' The legend is set in archaic Church Slavonic lettering, characteristic of Muscovite coinage of the mid-to-late sixteenth century. The text fills the irregular field typical of wire-cut planchets, with letter forms displaying the compact, slightly compressed style of hammer-struck Russian coins of the period. No border or decorative devices are present; the inscription alone occupies the full surface. |
