| Obverse description | Depiction of an armored equestrian warrior — traditionally identified as Saint George or the Tsar — mounted on a horse facing right, brandishing a long spear or lance diagonally across the field in the characteristic style of Russian wire money kopecks. The rider wears a crown and is rendered in bold, schematic relief typical of late 16th- to early 17th-century hammered coinage. Below the horse, the Cyrillic mint mark legend В НОР I appears in two lines, identifying the Velikiy Novgorod mint. The flan is of irregular, elongated shape as characteristic of the wire (cheshujka) production technique. |
