Additional information

Boris Godunov's reign began in 1598 after years of maneuvering through the court of Ivan the Terrible and the regency of Feodor I, making him the first tsar to reach the throne without Rurikid blood. The Novgorod mint was one of the primary striking facilities under his reign, producing wire money — the tiny, irregular planchets cut from silver rod that defined Russian coinage until Peter the Great's reforms a century later. The НОРАI mintmark designation places this piece among a documented sub-series within Novgorod production, referenced separately in Grishin-Kleshchinov's second edition.
