| Obverse description | Tsar on horseback facing right, depicted as a mounted warrior armed with a lance directed downward toward a serpent or fallen enemy beneath the horse's hooves, a characteristic motif derived from the image of St. George inherited from earlier Muscovite coinage. The flan is irregular in outline, characteristic of wire-money production, and the design is rendered in a bold but compact hammered style. The mint mark ⌉⌈ identifying the Pskov Mint appears in the field. Due to the small irregular flan, the design is frequently partially struck and off-center. |

Boris Godunov's accession in 1598 was itself contested — he was elected Tsar by a zemsky sobor after the death of Feodor I, the last Rurikid, making his coinage politically charged from the outset. The Pskov mint, one of the few regional operations still active under central Muscovite control, struck wire money (chekans) by the same hammered-flan technique unchanged since Ivan III. The ⌉⌈ privy mark distinguishes Pskov production within the reign and is the primary attribution anchor for this type.
