Boris Godunov's reign began not through dynastic succession but through a prolonged political maneuvering following the extinction of the Rurik line — he was elected tsar by a zemsky sobor in 1598, the first Russian ruler to claim the throne this way. Kopecks of his reign carry the Б-О-М control marks linking output to Moscow, distinguishing them from concurrent Novgorod and Pskov production. His seven-year reign ended with his sudden death in 1605, immediately triggering the Time of Troubles and the near-collapse of centralized Russian coinage infrastructure.
