Obverse description Armored equestrian figure of the Tsar facing right, depicted at full gallop and brandishing a lance or spear, rendered in the traditional wire money style with bold but schematic relief. The Moscow mint mark appears in the field, rendered in Cyrillic as 'М Д'. The design is characteristic of the long-standing Russian wire kopeck tradition, with the horse and rider motif derived from the image of St. George used on earlier silver dengas. The flan is irregular in shape, as is typical of hammered wire coinage of this period.
