Reverse description Reverse of the cut koban fragment, displaying the hammered gold surface typical of Japanese koban coinage with characteristic horizontal file marks across the field. A prominent circular VOC monogram countermark dominates the upper portion of the field, enclosing the intertwined VOC cipher within a beaded border, applied by the Dutch East India Company to certify the piece for trade use. Additional small punched symbols and assay marks are scattered across the field, including cross, asterisk, and crescent forms, reflecting multiple testing and verification impressions. The left edge bears further Japanese seal impressions from the original koban, and the irregular cut edge is visible along the lower and lateral margins.
