| Obverse description | The obverse depicts a frontal bust of Saint Gilles in high relief, shown as a bishop wearing a mitre and liturgical vestments, his hands crossed at the chest. Behind and below the saint is a detailed architectural rendering of the facade of the Abbey of Saint-Gilles (Abbatiale Saint-Gilles), featuring three Romanesque arched portals and a bell tower to the right. The legend curves along the left and upper rim, with the date 1116 and the 900th anniversary inscription in the field, and GARD appears in the lower exergue. |
