Reverse descriptionThe triskel, emblem of Sicily since antiquity, is also called Trinacria. It represents a woman`s head (Medusa, one of the three Gorgons), winged and topped with a knot of snakes and ears of wheat, from which radiate three bent legs, as if seized in full run. The ears of wheat were added to the snakes by the Romans, both as a symbol of fertility and because Sicily was Rome`s granary. This symbol first appeared on Syracuse coins in the 3rd century BC.
