| Obverse description | The obverse displays the underlying Saxe-Weimar Taler of 1622, struck with the standard German imperial taler design. Applied over the host coin are two Russian countermarks applied in 1655 by order of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich: a rectangular stamp bearing the date '1655' and a second stamp depicting a mounted horseman (the St. George type rider) with a raised spear, the traditional Muscovite royal symbol. The countermarks are punched into the field of the original taler, partially obscuring the host coin's design elements. |
