Obverse description The obverse retains the original 1624 Salzburg Thaler design, depicting Saint Rupert standing facing, vested in episcopal robes and mitre, holding a crozier in his left hand and a saltcellar in his right, flanked by an ornate heraldic shield below bearing the Salzburg lion. The circular legend reads SANCT·RVDBERT·EP·SALISB·1624, enclosed within a decorative wreath border. Applied diagonally across the field is a rectangular Russian counterstamp punch bearing the date 1655 in Cyrillic numerals, the hallmark of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich's jefimok overstrike program. A second circular counterstamp depicting a mounted horseman with a spear — the traditional Russian state symbol — is also applied to the field.
