Obverse description The obverse displays the Russian countermark applied at Moscow in 1655, consisting of two punches stamped onto the host Netherlands Rijksdaalder: a circular intaglio stamp depicting the Russian Imperial double-headed eagle within a beaded border, and a rectangular cartouche stamp bearing the date '1655' in Cyrillic-style numerals. The underlying Dutch host coin design — featuring the Provincial arms and surrounding legend — remains partially visible in the field around the countermarks. The eagle punch is centrally placed and shows the characteristic double-headed eagle with spread wings and orb, serving as the authenticating mark of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich. The combination of the two Russian stamps officially converted the foreign silver taler into a circulating Muscovite monetary unit.
