| Obverse description | The obverse displays the field of the underlying Eastern Friesland Thaler of 1564, partially obscured by two applied Russian counterstamps of 1655: a rectangular cartouche bearing the Cyrillic date (1655) and a circular stamp depicting a mounted horseman (the Tsar's equestrian effigy) carrying a spear, characteristic of the jefimok countermarking program instituted under Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich. The original host coin's legend, partially legible around the beaded border, reads fragments of the Latin inscription of the Friesland Thaler. The two counterstamps are struck in different orientations relative to each other and to the host coin's design. |
