| Obverse description | Host coin is an Austrian Taler of Archduke Ferdinand II (1564–1595), Davenport #8097, featuring a three-quarter armored bust of the Archduke facing left, crowned, wearing elaborate plate armor with ruff collar, within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding Latin legend reads FERDINANDVS D G ARCHID AVSTRIA. Two Russian countermarks applied in 1655 by order of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich are struck upon the host coin's obverse: a rectangular stamp bearing the date 1655 in Cyrillic numerals, and a circular stamp depicting a mounted horseman (the so-called 'jezdets') armed with a spear, being the standard mark of the Moscow mint's validation. |
