Additional information

The Oryol was the first Western-style warship built in Russia, launched in 1667 under Tsar Alexis at Dedinovo on the Oka River, constructed with Dutch assistance as part of an early push toward a Caspian naval presence. It never saw combat. A Cossack uprising under Stenka Razin captured the vessel at Astrakhan in 1670, and it was either burned or left to rot — accounts differ. Peter the Great later cited the Oryol as the symbolic founding vessel of the Russian navy, though he was just a child when it was destroyed.
