Obverse description Bust of the Theotokos (Virgin Mary) in orans posture, depicted half-length within a stylized fortress city walls featuring four towers, rendered in the characteristic Byzantine scyphate (concave) fabric. The Virgin's hands are raised in the traditional orans gesture of intercession, and abbreviated Greek inscriptions flank the figure in the field. The architectural city walls surrounding the figure serve as a symbolic representation of Constantinople as a divine stronghold under Marian protection.
