| Obverse description | The municipal arms of Cologne rendered in relief in the bracteate technique. The shield is divided horizontally into two registers: the upper half displays three crowns arranged in a row, emblematic of the Three Magi whose relics were kept at Cologne Cathedral, while the lower half bears six stylised flames or sparks disposed in two rows of three. The design is centrally positioned within the plain, irregularly shaped flan, with no surrounding legend. The hammered relief is bold relative to the thin flan, characteristic of late medieval Hohlheller bracteate coinage. |
