Kassandros ruled Macedonia without the royal title until 305 BC, when the fragmentation of Alexander's empire following the Wars of the Diadochi made kingship the only politically viable position among the successor dynasties. His bronze fractional coinage served the day-to-day commerce that his silver issues could not reach — markets, taverns, port transactions.
He died of dropsy in 297 BC, and within a few years his dynasty had collapsed entirely under the pressure of his sons' civil war.
