Obverse description Facing gorgoneion (Gorgon's head) depicted full face, with wide staring eyes, prominent ears, and a protruding tongue issuing from an open mouth with visible fangs. The hair is rendered as tight curling serpentine locks framing the broad, apotropaic visage. The face fills the entire flan in high relief, characteristic of the archaic Greek artistic convention for this apotropaic motif.
