Obverse description Bare head of the young Dionysos facing left, rendered with flowing, somewhat tousled hair adorned with an ivy wreath, the curling locks falling along the nape of the neck. The modelling of the face displays the refined Sicilian die-cutting tradition of the late fifth century BC, with well-defined brow, straight nose, and slightly parted lips. The legend ΣYPA appears in the field, identifying the issuing city of Syracuse. The flan shows the characteristic irregular edge of a hand-struck bronze issue.
