| Obverse description | Forepart of a ship's prow rendered as the protome of a fox or wolf facing left, with open jaws and prominent ear, executed in bold archaic relief. The prow form is framed by a rectangular border with a dentilated upper register, suggesting the decorated timbers of a trireme. Beneath the main device, a tunny fish swims to the left in the lower field, serving as the characteristic Kyzikene control symbol. The composition is divided horizontally, with the animal-headed prow occupying the upper register and the tunny the lower exergual area. The overall style is characteristic of the fine archaic electrum coinage of Kyzikos, noted for its vigorous and inventive iconography. |
