Additional information

The Arcadian League's federal coinage is among the earliest known examples of a Greek alliance issuing coins under a collective identity rather than individual polis authority — a genuinely unusual arrangement for the fifth century. Mantineia's participation in this federal issue came to an abrupt end when Sparta, hostile to the political consolidation the League represented, forced its dissolution around 460 BC and compelled the dioikismos of Mantineia itself, scattering its population into villages.

Williams 118 is a scarce variety within an already short-lived series.
