The Ainianes were a Thessalian people whose federal coinage was struck from a single mint at Hypata, their principal city nestled in the Spercheios valley beneath Mount Oeta. By the late second century BC, the broader Thessalian League had been thoroughly subordinated to Roman administrative oversight following the settlement of 148 BC, yet peripheral federal groupings like the Ainianes continued issuing small silver denominations — hemidrachms in particular — apparently for local exchange rather than any wider monetary ambition. The magistrate name Diameneos placing this piece squarely within the final generation of autonomous-style Thessalian federal silver before such issues ceased entirely.
